「What is the difference between an opinion and a fact?(事実と意見の境界はなに?)」

For our fourth event of International Philosophical Dialogue, 6 participants from various age groups joined us. I would like to thank all who participated!
We started our session by sharing reminders for the dialogue and introducing ourselves. We then proceeded to discuss the theme for this event: Border and Boundary. The word “Border/Boundary” can often provoke physical boundaries like national borders. However, boundaries are not only special to physical ones, and our current world is filled with questions related to a variety of them. For example, as generative artificial intelligence continues to develop, people are prompted to question the boundary between AI and humans.
We then asked participants to brainstorm a topic question regarding boundaries – the lines that distinguish one thing from another. Among the various questions raised, the one selected by the majority vote was…
” What is the difference between an opinion and a fact?”
In this post, I would like to give you a quick peek into the dialogue.
Picture the 17th-century Europe. At the time, geocentrism was the mainstream “fact,” and those who challenged it were cast out as heretics by the Church. Yet today, we know that such a theory was scientifically wrong. Reflecting on this history, one point raised in the dialogue was that what we call “facts” may actually contain people’s value judgments; in particular, that authority has historically played a role in determining what counts as “fact.”
Many participants initially described facts as “objective as it involves mathematical data,” while distinguishing opinions as “subjective.” However, as the dialogue continued, new questions kept popping up one after another, building on our initial thoughts:
◉ Does “fact” even exist in the first place?
◉ Where is the boundary between a fact and a truth?
◉ What does it even mean to be objective or subjective to begin with?
The discussion went even further, analyzing how facts and opinions interact with each other. Some participants pointed out that the two cannot be separated and suggested that we form our opinions based on facts.
In a world where media literacy is emphasized due to the spread of generative AI and social media, this conversation promoted the importance of pausing to reflect on such questions.
Upon reflection, a phrase that was popular in Japan a while back came to my mind: “That’s just your opinion, isn’t it?” But is having an opinion really a bad thing? Are there times when voicing “just” an opinion is appropriate, and times when it isn’t? And why is it that opinion and fact intertwining sometimes leads to conspiracy theories?
If you’d like, give it some thought in the back of your mind, too!
