“What does ‘adult’ mean to us?”
◉ responsibility(責任)
◉ independence(自立)
◉ social expectations(社会からの期待)
◉ culture(文化)
◉ moratorium(モラトリアム)
“Do we stop being an adult?”

For our fifth International Philosophical Dialogue, we welcomed three external participants and held a philosophical dialogue with seven people in total, including the organizing members. Thank you very much to everyone who joined us!
After introducing ourselves, we shared questions based on things we had recently been wondering about or wanted to explore.
Among the many questions raised, the one selected for our dialogue was…
“What does ‘adult’ mean to us?”
At the beginning of the dialogue, we discussed possible criteria for distinguishing adults from children, such as age, legal status, and physical development.
As the conversation continued, however, words such as the following began to emerge:
◉ responsibility
◉ independence
◉ social expectations
◉ culture
◉ moratorium
The same person may be seen as an “adult” by elementary school children, while being treated more like a “child” by older people. We also discussed how ideas of what it means to be “adult-like” may differ across countries, cultures, and generations.
From there, the dialogue expanded into another question: Is adulthood something that exists within an individual, or is it something created by society?
We also discussed whether it may take longer to become an adult today because people have more choices in life than in the past. At the same time, experiences and circumstances such as marriage, living alone, and financial independence may also lead people to feel or be expected to act more like adults.
Toward the end of the dialogue, another question emerged:
“Do we stop being an adult?”
Perhaps life is not simply a straight path from childhood to adulthood, but something more circular.
Starting from the familiar word “adult,” our dialogue expanded into questions about age, responsibility, independence, culture, society, and even the course of life itself.
What does being an “adult” mean to you?
