イベントでは哲学対話を「a group discussion on a topic without a straightforward answer to think critically about our everyday lives, deepen our understanding of the topic, share our values and experiences, and think deeply and freely(答えが一つに決まっていないテーマについてグループで話し合い、日常生活について批判的に考え、テーマへの理解を深め、自分たちの価値観や経験を共有しながら、深く自由に考えるための対話)」と定義しました。
また、6つのReminder(対話のルール)も共有しました:
① It’s okay to not speak up(発言しなくても大丈夫)
② When you want to speak up, please raise your hand(話したいときは手を挙げよう)
③ It’s okay to not be sure of anything!(何かに確信がなくても大丈夫!)
④ It’s okay to change your ideas or end without a clear conclusion(考えが変わっても、はっきりした結論が出なくても大丈夫)
⑤ Let’s be careful about HOW we say things, especially when disagreeing(特に意見が違うときは、何を言うかだけでなく、“どう伝えるか“も大切にしよう)
⑥ Let’s ask others if you don’t know the words that they have used, etc(相手が使った言葉などで分からないことがあれば、積極的に聞いてみよう)
「Why do we like stories?(どうして人はストーリーが好きなのか)」でした!

For the third event of International Philosophical Dialogue, we jumped straight into the discussion (after a quick self-introduction and explanation), since all of the participants had joined a philosophical dialogue before.
As a facilitator, I defined philosophical dialogue as “a group discussion on a topic without a straightforward answer to think critically about our everyday lives, deepen our understanding of the topic, share our values and experiences, and think deeply and freely”.
Additionally, I shared 6 important reminders for the dialogue:
① It’s okay to not speak up.
② When you want to speak up, please raise your hand.
③ It’s okay to not be sure of anything!
④ It’s okay to change your ideas or end without a clear conclusion.
⑤ Let’s be careful about HOW we say things, especially when disagreeing.
⑥ Let’s ask others if you don’t know the words that they have used, etc.
When brainstorming the topic question for the event’s dialogue, we used a platform called Padlet, sharing each other’s ideas on an online board. We took about 7 minutes for the brainstorming activity, and out of the 15 questions, the most votes went into・・・
Why do we like stories?
Below are some of the ideas that were shared during the dialogue:
◉ What is the value that stories somehow add to a product, a historical event, etc? Do we like stories to fulfill our intellectual curiosity, feel the emotions, and/or support a specific figure (such as the main character)?
◉ Wouldn’t stories allow us to experience scenarios (in our imaginary world) that we hadn’t or couldn’t experience in real life?
◉ Why do we engage in sad stories or those that evoke other negative emotions (such as a horror movie)?
◉ What is the difference between a story and a history textbook or a sacred text?
◉ Do we need to consider whether stories are actually true or not?
Now that the dialogue is over, I am personally interested in further pursuing what really is a “story”. Are there multiple types or levels to this concept, or is it something more precise…?
